Representation on Disability
The media does not always give benefits to society of how they portray society, especially towards disabled people. The use of disabled stereotypes is continuously used to discriminate disabled people, for example:
Portraying
the disabled person as pitiable or pathetic,
An
object of violence,
His/her own worst enemy,
Laughable,
Not being able to participate in society.
“Such stereotypes reinforce negative attitudes towards
disabled people, and ignorance about the nature of disability”
– Shakespeare (1999)
Media influences are often caused by a small group of
decision makers, producers, directors, writers all have their own opinions of
disabled people, this is what brings the influences to the media about the
publics opinions on disabled people.
